Personal Background

Practitioners at oPsportsmassage are trained and qualified to be Level 4 Sports Massage Practitioners. This is in line with the current National Qualifications Framework that the Sports Massage Association (SMA) requires for full membership.

Amy Woolstenholmes, the manager and main practitioner at oPsportsmassage, qualified as a level 4 sports massage practitioner in 2003.

Amy has led the North region of the SMA for a number of years, encouraging practitioners in the area to come together at local meetings discussing any issues that they may have. The North region of the SMA is now one of the most pro active regions, meeting quarterly, giving support to each other when required and providing massage at the Great North Run for a number of years.

Along with managing and treating for oPsportsMassage, Amy is also completing the BSc Physiotherapy degree at Northumbria University. The skills and knowledge developed as part of the degree will complement the soft tissue expertise gained over the years of treating.

Current Clients

Amy has been developing a client base covering a large range and abilities of people. Current elite sports performers of oPsportsmassage include the athletes at Durham County Cricket Club and the English Institute of Sport. These athletes receive treatment for a range of reasons such as recovery, maintenance, injury rehabilitation and performance enhancement.

Other clients treated by oPsportsmassage include those that do not play sport at all, but they are in need of the deep tissue manipulation. This can be as a result of a number of reasons, current client categories include:

Occupational reasons

e.g. sitting at computers for long periods of time without much movement can lead to a build up of tension in the soft tissue, this can put stress on the surrounding soft tissue and joints.

Conditional reasons

e.g. chronic fatigue syndrome, deep tissue manipulation improves the lymphatic flow and therefore helps the removal of waste from the soft tissues.

Social athlete

e.g. clients who play for a local team or go to the gym regularly (or not so regularly!) may develop imbalances in their soft tissue which could lead to an injury if not treated.
